2018 Opening Day Announcement

Teachers, faculty, and staff at Mountain Sun Community School welcomed 81 students back to school on August 22nd, 2018. The highest number of children in 11 years of operation joined together with their families on Brevard Music Center’s Campus to celebrate the beginning of an exciting new year.

Students were greeted by their teachers on the beautiful August morning. The classrooms filled with the sound of children laughing, reconnecting, and filling with excitement for the new year to come.

“We are excited to continue growing as a school and getting better at what we do each day. And we are thrilled to continue to impact the community in a positive way with new, exciting initiatives that are in development,” said Michael Brown, the school’s Executive Director.

An elementary age student said, “I’m so happy to see my friends and teachers, get outside, and get back to our work together.” Mountain Sun Community School’s mission is to cultivate each student’s natural curiosity and love of learning through a challenging academic curriculum grounded in mutual respect and a sense of belonging. Mountain Sun recognizes each student’s unique potential and nurtures their passions and abilities through a balance of direct instruction, collaborative and independent study, hands-on experiences in and out of the classroom, and service learning.

Mountain Sun embraces outdoor experiential education for children of all ages. In the first week of school, the middle school class went on an overnight trip on the Foothills Trail, the upper elementary students hiked Bracken Mountain Preserve, and the lower elementary and primary students explored the many lakes, creeks, trails, and outdoor spaces on campus. Teachers, students, faculty, and staff are eager to embrace the adventures to come in the new school year.

“We are excited to begin the transition from summer into the new school year by doing what we love to do: inspire learning, discover new works in the class, explore our surrounding forests, create beautiful pieces of art, and find belonging in our loving community,” said an elementary teacher.

Mountain Sun Community School is an independent, nonprofit school serving Preschool through Middle School and utilizes Montessori and other methods to provide a unique, inspired education for each child. Mountain Sun Community School is currently enrolling students for the 2018-19 Academic Year. Mountain Sun is a United Way partner agency.
